Next Event: Orthodox Pilgrimage/Retreat to the South-West 2014

Pilgrimage/Retreat May 2014

Visit the South-West of England and discover the early Church..

Woodands The South-West of England has some of the most ancient traces of early Christianity. Whether the traditions surrounding Glastonbury, and the ancient monastic settlements at the Abbey and on the Tor; or the shrine of St Wita or Candida at Whitchurch Canonicorum; or the archaelogy of Tintagel and the landscape of holy wells and ancient crosses. This is an ideal area in which to spend time in spiritual reflection and learning about the early Church in this part of Britain.

The pilgrimage/retreat will be directed by Father Peter Farrington, a priest of the British Orthodox Church within the Coptic Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria. He has a lifelong interest in the early Christian communities of the British Isles. Father Peter is responsible for several British Orthodox missions and parishes in the South of England.

We will be using Woodlands, a Regency period property in Teignmouth, and a Bed & Breakfast establishment since 1966, as our base for the week. Breakfast and an Evening meal will be taken at Woodlands, and our hosts will provide a Packed Lunch for us to enjoy during each one of the three day excursions arranged.

WoodandsEach morning and evening a period of Orthodox prayer with a scriptural reflection on a theme will keep our attention focussed on the development of a spiritual mind. While in the evening a range of speakers, including Dr. Niall Finneran, Reader in Early Medieval Archaeology at Winchester University, will address our group on aspects of the early Christian history of the South-West.

Three full days of excursions will see us heading East, West and North from Teignmouth to explore some of the sites associated with the early Christian communities in the area. We will visit the shrine of St Wita or Candida at Whitchurch Canonicorum, the Christian remains at Glastonbury, and the archaeology of the royal centre at Tintagel, together with many other diversions to inspect holy wells, ancient crosses and medieval monasteries and churches.

WoodandsWoodlands provides us with six twin and double rooms. Three with ensuite faciilities and three with shared bathroom. Although it is possible to reserve some of these rooms as single person we would prefer to have a group of twelve pilgrims and so will especially encourage couples, friends wanting to share a room, and guests willing to share with another pilgrim.

The cost of this residential event includes meals, accomodation, lectures and transport on organised excursions. It does not include transport to and from Woodlands at the beginning and end of the retreat.
